Ryan Film Institute of Martinsburg, WV, is the first and only program of its kind in the state of West Virginia, and in the Quad-State Area. The Institute offers a revamped and expanded
Teen Filmmakers’ Workshop that builds on the success of its original Star Power! Teen Filmmakers’ Workshop. Curriculum is refined each session to meet students’ needs and interests.

Originally an introductory one-week session, our program has evolved into three sessions, a new Digital Photography class, a TV Commercials workshop, and a four-week Short Films and Documentaries program. The Digital Photography and TV Commercials workshops are suitable for teens of all skill levels. The Short Films & Documentaries program provides an opportunity to delve deeply into the filmmaking experience.

Regardless of how much, or how little experience students have, they are cross-trained on aspects of photography and filmmaking. We strive to make sure that all students are comfortable with both creative and technical work necessary for planning and executing their still photography, commercials, short films and documentaries.

Workshops are held at Mountain State University’s Martinsburg campus, now located at Martinsburg Mall!, near Entrance #4. They include a mix of classroom sessions with guest lecturers and instructors who have expertise in film, television, and video. Sessions offer hands-on learning for the technical team about cameras and photography, lighting and sound, and film editing. We then go on location for production phase and filming.

Students interested in being a part of the creative team of writers, actors, and directors will have opportunities to write scripts, appear in their own productions, and direct cast and crew. After going on location to create their commercials, narrative short films and/or documentaries, students are involved in post-production work involving editing, voice overs, music tracks and DVD authoring. One week is devoted to Student Short Film Fest marketing, public relations, and DVD distribution. Location for this year’s Film Fest will be announced soon.
